The Early Christian Period: the Settlement of Halasarna

Directors: Sophia Kalopissi-Verti and Maria Panayotidi-Kesisoglou, Professors of Byzantine Archaeology

According to the excavation research data, during the Early Christian period (324 - mid 7th c.) Halasarna experienced great prosperity and was one of the most important centers of commerce on the south coast of Kos. Christianity must have spread early to Kos, which was one of the apostle Paul's destinations (Acts 21,1), since already in 325 the bishop of Kos, Meliphron, participated in the 1st Ecumenical Council.  However, the monuments that have come to light apparently can not be dated to before the 5th c.
