CULTURAL HERITAGE MANAGEMENT: ARCHAEOLOGY, CITY AND ARCHITECTURE

The Faculty of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens in collaboration with the Department of Architecture of the University of Patras and the Department of Cultural Technology of the University of the Aegean, have organized an interdisciplinary program of postgraduate studies entitled “Cultural heritage management: Archaeology, city and Architecture”, which is in function since the spring semester of the academic year 2008-2009.

The program aims at an interdisciplinary approach of the interconnections and interactions between architecture and the management of monuments in urban and sub-urban areas. It is based on the concept that constant development, a notion that has in recent years become an international obsession, and the idea of historical continuity and preservation of the cultural heritage in urban space, can and should coexist, support each other and combine into a scientifically, morally and socially beneficial result.

The main purpose of the program is the education of young scholars specializing in the management and administration of historical city centers and adjacent areas and in promoting interaction between the disciplines of archaeology and architecture, combining proposals from different perspectives.

It is a full time two-year program, with the following basic components:

1. Postgraduate seminars

2. Workshops on cultural heritage management issues within the urban structure

3. Interdisciplinary seminar

4. Postgraduate thesis

The coordination and the administrative support of the program are assigned to the Faculty of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens. The seminars take place daily in Athens (in the lecture hall of the Archaeological Park of the University Campus), while the first workshops on issues of cultural heritage management will be held at Athens, Naxos, Mytilni, Parta and elsewhere.

Further and updated information can be found in the website of the program http://www.dpmsdiax.arch.uoa.gr/ or in the website of the Faculty of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens www.arch.uoa.gr
