MARIA CHRISTINA CHATZIIOANNOU
Spring semester
Subject: The Greek state as a new area of business aspirations and ventures (19th-20thcentury). The establishment of the Greek state and the gradual distancing from the institutional framework of the Ottoman Empire will lead to changes, reversals, and continuities in the economy.
Following a period of transition, land, trade, maritime transport and finance will gradually experience a major renewal, which will come as a consequence of the emergence of the national economy. Sectors of private and state business plans:·The natural capitalas sociated with commodity crops·The manufacture’s world of raw materials (consumables, clothing)·Services: merchants, carriers, financiers.
This seminar has a twofold aim: 1) to set the reference framework, 2) and to address issues concerning the conditions prevailing in the Greek state during its foundation and the sectors of the economy that aspiring/ambitious investors were interested in. Through specific examples, the agents will be recognized as active mediators of collective processes, and the emergence of experience as a defining factor in the understanding of history, but also in “humanizing” economic history.
