The Department's field of scholarship covers the sister disciplines of History and Archaeology, with two respective directions of study, or specialisations. Since the academic year 1988/9 the Faculty has set up a program of postgraduate studies, consisting of eight fields of specialisation with marked success.

Courses in history and archaeology, both mandatory and seminars, aim at presenting an interpretative approach to history as well as a study of the material remains of human activities.

In 2009 the Department conducted an internal evaluation and in 2010 an external evaluation.
